Telling a friend or family member they need medical help isn’t always an easy conversation. Telling them they should visit a dentist can be especially difficult! You know it’s in their best interest to make an appointment, but how do you go about convincing them of that?

The most important thing you can do is have a conversation with them to understand why they don’t want to go. There are many reasons someone might avoid the dentist, and pinpointing their concern will help you both communicate effectively. After that, it’s all about addressing those concerns and offering your support.

Understanding Where They’re Coming From

Your loved one probably has a valid reason for not wanting to visit the dentist. Now, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t solutions! Just that their avoidance is coming from a real place. They might:

  • Have had a poor experience in the past
  • Have sensitivities that make dental work physically uncomfortable for them
  • Be worried about being able to afford treatment
  • Feel embarrassed about the state of their teeth
  • Not realize how oral health can affect their wellbeing

Addressing Their Concerns

Once you know why your friend or family member hasn’t been keeping up with their dental appointments, you can provide solutions and encouragement. For example:

  • A past experience doesn’t necessarily mean the next one will be similar. You can help them find a gentle and caring dentist who makes them feel heard.
  • Many dentists offer numbing gel, nitrous oxide, and other amenities to help reduce discomfort and promote relaxation.
  • Many dentists also provide flexible payment plans to help make treatment more affordable.

Remember to empathize with your loved one’s situation and explain that you’re concerned about their health. Passing judgement or dismissing their feelings is more likely to confirm their fears than alleviate them!

Offering Your Support

To wrap-up your conversation, let your loved one know that you’re willing to support them. If they’re nervous, you could come with them to their appointment. If they simply need a reminder, you could help them set up calendar notifications or use good ‘ol fashioned sticky notes.

Everyone needs a helping hand from time to time! Having a trusted companion in their corner can make a huge difference in how your loved one views visiting the dentist!
