Before and After Fillings

What is the process of getting a filling?

The process begins with numbing the affected tooth to ensure comfort. The decayed portion of the tooth is then removed, and the area is cleaned thoroughly. The composite material is applied in layers and hardened with a special curing light. The dentist then shapes and polishes the filling to ensure a comfortable bite. The whole procedure is typically quick, lasting about 30–60 minutes, and patients can resume normal activities soon after.

What are the symptoms of cavities?

Cavities often start with mild symptoms, such as tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods. As decay progresses, symptoms may include persistent toothache, visible holes or dark spots on the tooth, and discomfort when chewing. However, many cavities have virtually no symptoms, which is why it’s essential to visit our office regularly for check-ups. If left untreated, cavities can worsen, leading to infection or the need for more extensive dental work, such as root canals or crowns.

How will I know if I need a filling replaced?

You may need a filling replaced if you experience sensitivity, pain, or notice cracks, wear, or discoloration in the existing filling. A loose or missing filling can allow bacteria to enter, leading to decay beneath it. Some patients want their silver fillings replaced with composite fillings for aesthetic purposes, which we are happy to do as well. Not sure if your filling needs to be replaced? Our team can assess your smile and make a recommendation at your next visit.
